A Brooklyn movie theater caused a stir online yesterday when they announced they were going to be doing special Wonder Woman screenings just for women and female-identifying folks. Is the news that femme fans of super hero comics and movies have waited a long time for this shocking? No. Is it surprising that they might want to experience it together in a group with other women who’ve waited a long time? No. Is it that strange that a theater is trying to help women and girls feel more included in a subculture that is so notoriously exclusionary we have a sister site dedicated to doing the same thing? No. Is the theater banning men from every showing? No. Somehow, still, the outcry against the Alamo Drafthouse persisted.Alamo responded today……by becoming the very definition of “unbothered” and adding another women-only showing. It’s for Thursday, June 8, and it isn’t sold out yet, unlike the other two.Oh, and if you’re in Austin, … [Read more...] about Movie Theater Adds More Women-Only Wonder Woman Sparking Twitter Outrage

The news that actress Gal Gadot will be playing Wonder Women in Man of Steel 2 is just hours old, and already the Internet has expressed strong opinions about it. One of the most surprising reactions came from the Twitter account for the DC Women Kicking Ass blog, which has equated past experience with acting ability. In the description of the Twitter account, it says that @dcwomenkicknass is “The Twitter home of the DC Women Kicking Ass blog” which can be found on Tumblr. As per the contact page, that blog is run by a woman named Sue. We think it’s safe to assume it’s the same person who runs the Twitter account. We’ve used the relevant tweet as the cover image for this post, but to give it a bit of context, here are the few tweets preceding it:That seems pretty clear.Man of Steel that we took notice of him, and without heading to IMDB, we couldn’t tell you another thing he’s been in off the top of our heads. You’re starting to … [Read more...] about DC Women Kicking Ass Takes a Surprising Stance on Wonder Woman Casting News
Gal Gadot has finally done her first interview on the subject of her Wonder Woman casting. Unfortunately for us, it’s an Israeli interview, so the whole thing is in Hebrew, but if the translation is accurate, the guy conducting the interview completely misunderstands the issue people are having with Gadot as “her boobs are too small.”If you’ve somehow missed the entire thing, fans have taken issue with the fact that a woman who fits Hollywood’s current skinny girl body type was cast as such a powerful female character. Many of them would have preferred a bulkier, more muscular Wonder Woman. Thanks to a reader on Batman News, we’ve got a translation for some of the Interview questions for you, and that’s where things get a little… odd. Here, see for yourself:It’s been said that you’re too skinny for the part. Wonder Woman is large-breasted, is that going to change?Hmm. I represent the Wonder Woman of the new world. … [Read more...] about Gal Gadot Speaks on Wonder Woman Casting, and We Think Something Got Lost in Translation
We thought you’d like to know. But does this really mean we’ve got a Wonder Woman feature film in our future? The news is everywhere today that Gal Gadot, who has already been confirmed to play Wonder Woman in Batman vs Superman, has signed with Warner Bros. to portray the character in at least three movies. That’s pretty standard, if not universal, for actors in any action film, but especially superhero franchises of the kind Warner Bros. wants to build. That is, of the kind the Marvel has already built. But does this mean we’re definitely getting a Wonder Woman film? Variety says they have it on good authority that “Gadot will play the role in not only the upcoming “Batman-Superman” flick, but in a Justice League movie and a Wonder Woman standalone film.” And if this were Marvel we were talking about, I’d take that at face value. But Marvel has the kind of franchise where nobody bats an eye if they quietly take the #5 highest … [Read more...] about Gal Gadot Signs 3-Picture Deal With Warner Bros., Including Wonder Woman Feature?
Investor meetings aren’t usually how we get our entertainment news, but we’ll take it. Read on for a slew of DC Comics movie news just announced!/Film and others are reporting some very interesting news coming out of a Warner Bros. stockholder meeting. Last time we had news on the first live-action Wonder Woman film, Warner Bros. looked like they were close to hiring a writer. Now it seems they might be going overboard with that whole hiring thing. I guess she really is tricky after all.Sigh. So there’s really not a whole lot to go on here at the moment. The rumor comes from producer/screenwriter Arash Amel (Grace of Monaco). He tweeted the following:You may recall Warner was also putting writers to work on two different scripts for their Jason Momoa-starring Aquaman film. We have to agree with Amel here that this is not a great trend. Badass Digests’ Devin Faraci tweeted he’s heard they may merge the Wonder Woman scripts, which in my mind could make for a giant mess.Amel’s other tweets seem to indicate he feels it would actually be illegal for Warner Bros. to do this but I don’t know enough about the Writer’s Guild to comment. What do you think about this tactic?(via Blastr) Are you following The … [Read more...] about Warner Bros. In an interview with the LA Times, actress Gal Gadot said there’s going to be a difference between the Wonder Woman audiences got to know during her brief cameos in Batman V Superman: Dawn of Justice and the Wonder Woman who will be starring in her own standalone movie come 2017. It’ll likely be easier for audiences to understand once they know that Wonder Woman won’t be a continuation of the Justice League timeline–but rather an origin story film for the character, going back to her beginnings on the island of Themyscira and continuing on through her journey as she leaves her home and ventures to America. The Wonder Woman you’re going to see in Batman v Superman is a very different Wonder Woman that you will see in the standalone movie. The Wonder Woman that you see in Batman v Superman is a woman who has been around, and she’s very experienced. She understands a lot about man. Whereas in the standalone movie we are telling the grown-up story. … [Read more...] about Gal Gadot Says There’s a Difference Between Wonder Woman in Her Own Film Versus

DC recently announced a Wonder Woman prequel series that will explore the history of the Amazons, which sounds pretty sweet. Less sweet is the fact that a female comics creator pitched a Wonder Woman prequel series a while back, never heard a response about it, only to hear the news that one was not only happening, but that it was happening based on a pitch from a male writer.According to io9, DC announced a new series “called The Odyssey of the Amazons, set in Amazonian society years before the birth of Wonder Woman” that will follow them as they venture away from Themiscyra and out into the world, fighting mythological monsters along the way. It will be written by Underworld creator, Kevin Grevioux, who plans to “tie the origins of the Amazons in with powerful warrior women across different cultures.”In an interview with The Hollywood Reporter, he said: We were looking at the great epic poems, like the Iliad, Jason and the Argonauts — what if we … [Read more...] about Wonder Woman’s Amazons Finally Getting An Origin of Their Own — How Much Does Who Creates It Matter?
This is a situation many of us have dreamed about, and now it exists in sketch form.In a nod to the Amazons’ all-female lifestyle—hey, it was the cinematic Wonder Woman that first had Diana say, “men are essential for procreation but when it comes to pleasure, unnecessary”—Saturday Night Live‘s “Themyscira” sketch imagines two modern lesbians landing on the paradisical island, uncertain if they’re faced with feast or famine.Although we would love it if Diana’s canonical bisexuality were to make it to the big screen, at least this sketch is a thing that is now part of our world. Here is some nice news:People are saying good things about Thor: Ragnarok and especially good things about Tessa Thompson and I cannot WAIT for this film. *grabby hands* (via Comicbookmovie)Elijah Wood would like to star in a Y the Last Man TV adaptation and I would like Elijah Wood to star in a Y the Last Man TV adaptation.
