Ever since Mueller Monday, it’s become harder for Trump to scream that the Special Prosecutor’s Russian collusion investigation is a big nothingburger witch hunt—because his former aide George Papadopoulos pleaded guilty to lying to the FBI about his contact with the Russians. Trump says his memory is just so darned fuzzy about the whole thing. Quoth NPR:“It was a very unimportant meeting, took place a long time ago,” Trump told reporters at the White House before he boarded a helicopter for his trip to Asia. That March 31, 2016, meeting of Trump’s campaign team has taken on new importance this week after prosecutors disclosed that a young adviser at the table had pleaded guilty to making false statements about the nature of his contacts with Russians last year.Seeming to take a page out of Jeff Sessions’ notebook—Sessions loves to say that he “doesn’t recall” doing anything incriminating, that it generally … [Read more...] about Things We Saw Today: Trump Says He “Doesn’t Remember Much” About His Aide Proposing a Meeting With Putin

Fox News Sunday this morning, Chris Wallace fact-checked Donald Trump‘s attacks on Hillary Clinton and his flip-flops on two of his major issues.Wallace, like CNN did days ago, went through a list of things Trump said about Clinton––she wants open borders, she wants to spend hundreds of billions on refugees, and she was asleep during Benghazi––and said none of it’s true.He asked Trump supporter Newt Gingrich, “There’s plenty to attack her on, but why not stick to the facts?”Gingrich defended Trump on Benghazi––saying that Clinton was metaphorically asleep at the wheel––and that her immigration policy is tantamount to open borders.Wallace also brought up Trump’s big apparent flip-flops on the Muslim ban and mass deportations. He asked, “What does Trump stand for?”Watch Gingrich’s rather remarkable defense of Trump’s “evolving” above, via Fox.[image via … [Read more...] about Wallace Fact-Checks Trump on Hillary Attacks, Flip-Flops: ‘What Does Trump Stand For?’
Don Lemon went off on Donald Trump earlier tonight and declared, in reaction to his disavowal of birtherism, “Donald Trump was not being honest. He did not want to say those words.”He said that it was beyond clear Trump was being “disingenuous” and still believes he was right to ask questions. But, Lemon argued, “what he did was insulting. There are other words I could say, but I won’t use on television.”Lemon sounded very personally disgusted by Trump’s remarks today, calling out his supporters for their “disingenuous” spin and saying that his remarks won’t “help him with decent people in America.”And he concluded with this: “I don’t believe what Donald Trump said. I don’t believe most of America believes what Donald Trump said. And if he really did believe what he said, he would say, ‘I apologize to the President of the United States.'”Watch above, via CNN.[image via … [Read more...] about Don Lemon Goes Off: ‘I Don’t Believe What Donald Trump Said’ About Birtherism
Fox and Friends, Trump accused the New York City Police Department of knowing who the terrorists are before they attack, but allowing the attacks to happen anyway. And he somehow meant this as a compliment.Co-host Brian Kilmeade pressed Trump to get specific about what he means by “getting tough” on terrorism, and Trump responded by explaining that the local police are “amazing,” but also too afraid to arrest terrorists before they attack: You know, our police are amazing, our local police. They know who a lot of these people are, they are afraid to do anything about it, because they don’t want to be accused of profiling, and they don’t want to be accused of all sorts of things. What Trump is trying to do is illustrate what he and his supporters see as the supposed ill effects of so-called “political correctness,” but what he’s actually saying is that NYPD officers are cowards with blood on their hands. If they did, in fact, … [Read more...] about Trump Says NYPD Knows Who Terrorists Are But Let Attacks Happen Anyway
Kayleigh McEnany protested on Monday morning that Democrats had misheard Trump say that the election is rigged at the final debate. (Trump did say that the election is rigged at the final debate.)During the third debate, Trump refused to say that he would concede the election should he lose. “I will look at it at the time,” he said. He went on to say that the election was “rigged” because of widespread voter fraud, a skewed media, and because Clinton was “guilty of a very very serious crime,” he said.“We heard during the debate, when he said, ‘I want to wait and see what happens,’ so much was made of that,” McEnany said on CNN Monday morning. “But I think that that’s a completely fair point.” She noted that in the case of an extremely close election — such as what occurred in Florida in 2000 — additional scrutiny might be warranted. She continued: “We’ve heard from those … [Read more...] about Kayleigh McEnany: Only Democrats Heard Trump Say the Election is ‘Rigged’
John Dickerson spoke with Paul Ryan on Face the Nation today, and he asked the House Speaker about whether President Trump derailed the debate on health care reform with his claims about being wiretapped.Ryan said with a laugh that Trump’s allegations weren’t “really part of the healthcare marketing campaign.” This prompted Dickerson to ask “how much off-course” the political conversation went thanks to Trump’s bombshell claims.Ryan insisted that national intelligence agencies would look into Trump’s claims, but in terms of the president’s tweets, Ryan said, “That’s outside of my control, what is tweeted or what isn’t tweeted.” He went on to say that Trump is as focused as Congress on reforming health care policy, and that Trump is “frustrated” by the “selective leaks” coming out of his administration.Dickerson finished by asking Ryan if he saw any evidence to back up Trump’s … [Read more...] about CBS’ Dickerson to Paul Ryan: ‘How Much Off-Course’ Did Trump’s Wiretapping Tweets Take You?
CNN’s Don Lemon went off tonight after commentator Matt Lewis suggested that maybe the media is hyperventilating too much about the news today out of the House Intelligence Committee hearing.Lewis argued that there’s a danger that the press is hyping too much how bad today was for Trump when we’re living in a whole new political world now.Lemon shot back, “It sounds like you’re making excuses for misinformation, you’re making excuses for lies, you’re making excuses for the evidence that’s all there in place.” RELATED: Don Lemon Goes Off: ‘We Are Making Excuses for People Who Are Divorced from Reality’ Lemon insisted that there’s no hyperventilating going on, and Lewis responded by pointing to cable news coverage in the past few hours. Lemon said people are mostly “incredulous.”Lewis asked, “How many bad days did Donald Trump have before he won the election?” This set Lemon off too, … [Read more...] about ‘What You’re Saying Now Is Alternative Fact!’: CNN’s Don Lemon Clashes With Matt Lewis
In addition to all the politically-sanctioned bigotry we’re seeing come out of Trump’s administration (like nominating an anti-choice “fascist forever” to the Supreme Court, hiring an anti-Semite as your Chief strategist, and repealing protections of transgender youth, just for starters), a major fear we’re facing is that people will view the election of a man who ran for President on a platform of hatred and intolerance, and take it as tacit permission to be hateful and intolerant themselves. That’s what we mean when we talk about “Trump’s America.” If our President is a misogynist and a racist and a xenophobe and so much else, the citizens who also embody those traits are growing emboldened, like bigotry is now an official American value. That seemed to be the case with the man in the video above, who felt like it was totally appropriate and acceptable to ask a Pakistani couple in traditional dress if … [Read more...] about Man Kicked Off a Flight for Being Racist Learns “This Is Not Trump’s America!”
During her Tuesday press briefing, Sarah Huckabee Sanders faced questions about why President Trump declined to personally announce his decision to end DACA.Trump released a statement about his decision earlier today, but it came after the formal announcement was made by Attorney General Jeff Sessions. Sanders faced a lot of questions about the decision today, and CNN’s Jim Acosta asked why the president decided not to announce his own decision.“Why did the president not come out and make this announcement himself today?” Acosta asked. “Why did he leave it to his Attorney General? It’s his decision. These kids, their lives are on the line because of what he’s doing.”Sanders answered by saying the DACA program was an illegal executive act, and therefore “it would be the Department of Justice to make a legal recommendation, and that’s what they did.” Earlier in the press briefing, Sanders took swipes at Congress for not coming … [Read more...] about CNN’s Acosta to Huckabee Sanders: Why Did Trump Have Sessions Announce His DACA Decision?
President Donald Trump briefly addressed the media on the White House lawn has he made his way to Marine One with First Lady Melania by his side on Tuesday. The Commander-in-Chief is on his way to view hurricane ravaged Puerto Rico, the recovery of which has become something of a political football.Starting last Friday, and through the weekend, Mr. Trump was in a rhetorical battle with those who have been critical of this administration’s response to Puerto Rico, especially Carmen Yulin Cruz, the mayor of San Juan, who had suggested that the US Territory she calls home was on the verge of “genocide.”In a stunning series of weekend tweets, the President impugned the character of many in Puerto Rico. Trump called out Yulin Cruz specifically, saying “Such poor leadership ability by the Mayor of San Juan, and others in Puerto Rico, who are not able to get their workers to help. They…want everything to be done for them when it should be a community effort. … [Read more...] about President Trump on Puerto Rico: ‘At a Local Level They Have to Give Us More Help’
