No matter how you look at it, the killing of Trayvon Martin is an ugly, ugly story that touches on any number of touchy subjects; vigilantism, gun control, possible police misconduct, issues with the controversial “Stand Your Ground” law, and the touchiest of all, race. As our own Frances Martel so elegantly explained Sunday, this case shouldn’t be seen as just a “black problem,” but a case we all follow closely. However, the story is inexorably tied to race issues and probably will be even more so now that some are claiming that they can hear the shooter, George Zimmerman, grumbling about “fucking coons” in the 911 call he made before killing Martin. The killing has become a huge national story thanks in part to the contributions of black media figures bringing it to people’s attention, but also due to the 911 calls that local Sanford police released to the public late last week. Most of the recordings are from local residents who heard … [Read more...] about Did George Zimmerman Complain About ‘F*cking C**ns’ In 911 Call Before Killing Trayvon Martin?

According to a report from South Florida TV News, the person allegedly responsible for the misleading edit to George Zimmerman‘s 911 call was a local reporter/producer named Jeff Burnside, and he has been fired by Miami NBC affiliate WTVJ. The edited tape gave the false impression that Zimmerman told the 911 operator, unprompted, that now-slain teenager Trayvon Martin “looks black,” while the full tape reveals he was asked about the young man’s race. The report says that a producer at the network level, who failed to check the tape because it came from an affiliate, was also fired. From SFLTV:You won’t hear it anywhere else but here – insiders have told us WTVJ reporter Jeff Burnside was fired last Friday for allegedly editing the Trayvon Martin 911 tape, the same tape NBC aired on ‘Today’ in early April. Allegedly, his firing wasn’t announced internally and so far there is no information whether NBC made a … [Read more...] about NBC Affiliate Aired Edited Zimmerman 911 Call Days Before Today Show Did
I knew it wasn’t going to be easy to follow last night’s bombshell Breaking Bad semi-season premiere with episode five of The Newsroom. And while Aaron Sorkin’s consistently inconsistent show could never touch the brilliant intensity of Vince Gilligan’s, last night’s episode was hands-down the best of the season and quite possibly the best of the series. And it was all because it took place in real time, as the episode’s title indicated, during one full taping of “News Night With Will McAvoy.”Yes, this was The Newsroom’s version of a bottle episode, but instead of the characters being claustrophobic-ly stuck in a meth lab with a fly or a study room with a monkey, the News Night crew was right where they were supposed to be, delivering the news at 8pm on the night of March 16th, 2012. With the real time constraints in place, the show can’t resort to its usual flashback nonsense and must instead stick to the news of the … [Read more...] about Recap: Who Really Edited Zimmerman’s 911 Call?
Georgia officials have released the terrifying 911 call that may have saved many children’s lives Tuesday after 20-year-old convicted felon, Michael Brandon Hill, entered McNair Discovery Learning Academy near Atlanta with nearly 500 rounds of ammunition. NBC Nightly News aired portions of the 911 call Wednesday night, in which school bookkeeper Antoinette Tuff can be heard telling the operator, “He said he don’t care if he dies, he don’t have nothing to live for.”Tuff relayed messages to the police during the 24-minute 911 call, telling them not to let anyone inside the building and warning them about his mental state. Fox News became the first cable news network to play audio from the just-released 911 calls from the Sandy Hook Elementary School shooting that occurred nearly a year ago on December 14th, 2012. Shortly after the Shepard Smith-hosted 3pm hour began, Fox aired short excerpts from the calls, though it said it was withholding the most disturbing clips. Mainstream television outlets have been generally cautious with the sensitive material, saying they would review the content before deciding which parts, if any, to play on the air. More than an hour after they first appeared on the internet, Smith told Fox viewers that the calls “capture a mix of chaos and calm professionalism as a gunman opened fire at Sandy Hook Elementary School and murdered children and teachers one by one. Fox News will not be airing the most gut-wrenching moments from those calls.”“We and our managers have listened to all the recordings that came in that day,” he continued, “and out of … [Read more...] about Fox Is First Cable News Network to Play Audio From Newtown 911 Calls
Police in Lake Mary, Florida have released audio from the 911 call made on Monday after Matthew Apperson allegedly shot George Zimmerman through his car window, causing a “minor gunshot wound” after what authorities are calling an “ongoing dispute” between the two men that dates back to last fall. “The guy right here just said he had to shoot someone through his window, so he wants the police to come,” the unidentified caller can be heard telling a 911 dispatcher in the short recording, seriously burying the lead in the process. “He said it was George Zimmerman.”Police recovered two guns from Apperson’s car, including a 357 revolver they say he used to shoot Zimmerman, along with a Glock from Zimmerman’s car. They are currently investigating the incident and no charges have been filed. Last night, CNN’s Sunny Hostin speculated that Apperson could use a “stand your ground” defense if charged with aggravated … [Read more...] about LISTEN: Police Release 911 Call from George Zimmerman Shooting Incident
It’s widely acknowledged that we’ve reached a point where the death of reality TV stars receive just as much microscopic attention as, say, the NSA gets. (Society! Whassa matta witcha.) But we’re getting the ambiguously moral feels about TMZ releasing a 911 call from a woman who found Josh Marks, the Masterchef runner-up who committed suicide after learning he had been diagnosed with schizophrenia. According to TMZ:The woman who calls for help says ANOTHER woman had just rang her doorbell and informed her that she had just discovered a dead body, but she was too afraid to call police. But the caller, with nerves of steel, calmly explains the situation to the 911 dispatcher — who sends responders to the scene.Yes, yes, we’re The People Who Obsess Over Celebrity Chefs, but when we feel uncomfortable with knowing all this — when we’re asking why TMZ found it necessary to dig that deeply into Marks’s case and emerge from a hole with this call … [Read more...] about TMZ Releases Audio of Josh Marks’s 911 Call; We Feel Weird About It
